What to Do on Thanksgiving Weekend in Puerto Rico?

What to Do on Thanksgiving Weekend in Puerto Rico?

Four days, one island and a Christmas season switching on around you. Here's how to fill a Thanksgiving weekend in Puerto Rico with the good stuff, and leave enough room for the beach.

The best thing about Thanksgiving weekend in Puerto Rico is the timing. You arrive on an island that's just finished eating and is about to start celebrating, and for four days you get both. Thursday is family and food. By Friday the decorations are going up, there's music in the plazas, and the north coast is catching its first proper winter swell. It's a long weekend that feels longer than it is.

The other good thing is the size of the place. Puerto Rico is small enough that a rainforest, a five-hundred-year-old city and a glowing bay are all within reach of the same bed, so you can do a lot without ever repacking. The trick is choosing a few things well rather than all of them badly.

Here's what's worth your time, day by day, with Dorado as the base.

What happens in Puerto Rico over Thanksgiving weekend?

Thanksgiving Day is a federal holiday here, so Thursday is about family meals. Friday kicks off the Christmas season, with Black Friday at the big San Juan malls and lights going up across the island. The weekend is ideal for beaches, El Yunque, Old San Juan and a bioluminescent bay, and it's also winter baseball season.

A few facts for planning, in one place:

  • Date: Thanksgiving falls on Thursday, November 26, 2026.
  • What's open: most attractions, beaches and restaurants run through the weekend. Book Thursday dinner and tours ahead.
  • Weather: warm days with a steady breeze. The north coast starts picking up winter swell, so beach conditions vary.
  • Big events: the island's Christmas season starts that weekend, and the professional winter baseball league usually plays from November.
  • Getting around: a rental car is the easiest way to do day trips from Dorado.

How should you spend Thursday?

Beach in the morning, table in the afternoon. Go early to Playa Sardinera while the sand is cool and the light is soft, then head home for the meal. Cook in a house with a full kitchen, order a pavochón from a local kitchen, or bring in a private chef and eat outside as the sun goes down.

There's no prize for leaving the house on Thanksgiving Day. The island itself is mostly at home with family, and the nicest version of the day here is the slow one. A swim, a long lunch that turns into dinner, the doors open to the trade wind, and the kids going in and out of the pool until somebody calls them for dessert.

We wrote out exactly how to plan the meal, including where to order the island's famous pavochón and which stays have the kitchen for it, in Where Can You Have Thanksgiving Dinner in Puerto Rico?

What's worth doing on Black Friday?

Either the malls or the rainforest, and the family usually splits. Plaza Las Américas in San Juan is the island's big shopping event that morning. The quieter alternative is El Yunque, which is at its best early, before the day warms up. Both work from Dorado, and both leave the evening free.

El Yunque, the green day

The only tropical rainforest in the US national forest system sits on the east side of the island, a real day out from Dorado and worth every minute of the drive. Expect wet trails, the constant whistle of the tiny coquí frogs, misty viewpoints and waterfalls cold enough to make you yelp. Check the forest's official site for road access and any timed-entry tickets before you leave, wear shoes you don't mind ruining, and pack a dry shirt for the ride home. The full day is in El Yunque Day Trip from Dorado.

Black Friday shopping

If shopping is a family tradition you'd hate to break, San Juan's big malls take Black Friday seriously, and Plaza Las Américas is the largest of them. Go early, park patiently, and plan a late lunch somewhere with air conditioning.

Winter baseball

Puerto Rico's professional winter league usually opens its season in November, and a night game is one of the most local things you can do on the island. The crowds are loud, the music never stops, and the food stands are half the point. Check the league's schedule for that weekend's games before you go.

Where should you go on Saturday?

The water, then the city after dark. Spend Saturday morning on the north coast, watching or learning to surf at Kikita if the swell's in, or swimming at a sheltered balneario if it isn't. In the evening, head east for a bioluminescent bay paddle, or drive into Old San Juan to see the Christmas lights come on.

The north coast changes character in late November. The first real North Atlantic swells arrive, and the surf breaks start doing what local surfers wait all year for. Kikita, a few minutes along the coast from the balneario, is where it shows first, and an hour on the sand watching the sets roll in is a perfectly good way to spend a morning even if you never touch a board. Surf schools run lessons when conditions suit beginners. If the sea is big, the balneario at Dorado and Playa Sardinera are the places to swim, with the lifeguard flags deciding the day.

Then pick an evening. A bioluminescent bay is the one people talk about for years: you paddle out after sunset and every stroke lights up the water in electric blue. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the easiest from Dorado, and tours need booking ahead on a holiday weekend. Or go to Old San Juan, where the plazas and balconies are being dressed for Christmas and the old streets fill with families walking off their Thanksgiving dinners.

What makes Sunday worth saving?

Food. Sunday is the day to drive up into the mountains for lechón, or out to the coast east of San Juan for fried snacks from beach kiosks. Then back to Dorado for a last swim and leftovers on the terrace before the flights home.

The Ruta del Lechón in Guavate, up in the hills of Cayey, is a string of open-air lechoneras where whole pigs roast over wood and families eat at long tables with live music, especially at weekends. It's a winding drive and a long lunch, and it's one of the most joyful afternoons on the island. Closer to the city, the kiosks at Piñones in Loíza fry bacalaítos and alcapurrias right by the sea, and they're perfect for a lazy Sunday that doesn't want to drive far.

Then home, a swim while the light goes gold, and the last of the pavochón eaten standing up in the kitchen. That's the right ending.

Thanksgiving weekend in Puerto Rico: common questions

Is everything closed on Thanksgiving Day in Puerto Rico?

No. Thanksgiving is a federal holiday, so government offices close and many families stay home, but beaches, many restaurants and tourist attractions stay open. Book dinner and tours ahead for Thursday.

What is Black Friday like in Puerto Rico?

Busy. The big malls in San Juan, especially Plaza Las Américas, run early-opening sales, and it's a popular family outing on the island. If shopping isn't your thing, Friday is a great day for El Yunque.

Can you surf in Puerto Rico at Thanksgiving?

Often, yes. Late November brings the first winter swells to the north coast, and Kikita in Dorado is one of the spots that picks them up. Lessons depend on conditions, so check with a surf school.

Is Thanksgiving weekend a good time for a bioluminescent bay tour?

Yes, and it's popular, so book early. Laguna Grande in Fajardo is the easiest from Dorado. The glow is strongest on darker nights, so check the moon phase when you choose your evening.

When does the Christmas season start in Puerto Rico?

Right after Thanksgiving. Decorations go up that weekend, parrandas begin, and the celebrations run all the way to Three Kings Day and beyond in January.

How far is Dorado from Old San Juan?

It's on the same north coast, a short drive west of the city, so an evening in Old San Juan is an easy outing from Dorado.
