Things to do in Dorado, Puerto Rico: a guide from Aqua Dorado

Every place named on this page, with what it is, how far it is from the Aqua Dorado tourism properties in Dorado, and one practical tip. Drive times are approximate and assume light traffic.

Beaches

Playa Sardinera Manuel "Nolo" Morales

Dorado, Puerto Rico

This is Dorado's public beach (the balneario), with parking, restrooms and showers. It's the closest beach to the Aqua Dorado properties: a few minutes by car, and a walk from some of them. Weekends fill up, so go early for parking.

Sardinera Dorado Beach East

Dorado, Puerto Rico

The stretch of the Sardinera coast toward Dorado Beach East, about 10 minutes by car from the properties. That side borders the Dorado Beach resort community, so check access before you drive over. The public balneario is the easy option.

Kikita Surf Beach

Dorado, Puerto Rico

Dorado's surf beach, a 10 to 15 minute drive from the properties. Local surfers and bodyboarders come here, and the best waves arrive with a north swell. Check a surf forecast for Playa Kikitas before you load the boards.

Attractions

Rockefeller Nature Trail

The closest is Laguna Grande, about 55 miles east, roughly an hour and a half by car. You see it on a guided kayak tour after dark (swimming isn't allowed there), so book ahead and plan for a late drive back.

Bowling & Arcade

Dorado, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico travel basics, from Dorado

The questions guests ask us most before they arrive.

Do U.S. citizens need a passport to visit Dorado, Puerto Rico?

No. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, so a flight from the mainland is a domestic flight and U.S. citizens don't need a passport. Travellers 18 and older do need an ID the TSA accepts to board: a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID, or another accepted document such as a U.S. passport. Visitors from other countries follow the same entry rules as for the rest of the United States.

What currency, phone service and power outlets does Puerto Rico use?

The U.S. dollar. Electricity is 120 volts with the same plugs as the mainland United States, so devices from there need no adapter. U.S. mobile carriers operate here, so most of those phones work the way they do at home. Check your plan to be sure.

Do I need to rent a car in Dorado?

For most trips, yes. Dorado's beaches, restaurants and golf courses are spread out, and day trips to Old San Juan, El Yunque or Fajardo are all by road. If you plan to stay close to the beach and take one or two rides, you can manage without one.

Do Uber and rideshares work in Dorado?

Yes. Uber operates in Dorado and at the San Juan airport. Uber itself notes that pickups in Dorado can take longer than in a big city, so for an early flight or a dinner reservation, schedule the ride in advance in the app.

Do people speak English in Dorado?

Spanish is the everyday language in Puerto Rico. English is widely used too, especially at hotels, restaurants and with tour operators, so a visitor who only speaks English gets by fine.

What local food should I try?

Start with mofongo (fried green plantain mashed with garlic), tostones, arroz con gandules (rice with pigeon peas) and lechón asado, pork roasted slowly over coals. In Dorado, Panela serves Puerto Rican cooking and Villa Dorada De Alberto serves seafood across from the beach.

How far is Dorado from the San Juan airport (SJU), Old San Juan and El Yunque?

From the Aqua Dorado properties, Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU) is about 24 miles, usually 35 to 45 minutes by car. Old San Juan is about 30 to 40 minutes. El Yunque National Forest is about 45 miles east, roughly an hour and a quarter. Allow extra time at rush hour.

Can I work remotely from Dorado?

Yes. WiFi, power generator and water cistern on every property. AQUA Ville Moderna and the AQUA Casas are within walking distance of Piloto 151 Dorado, a 7,000-square-foot coworking space near Sardinera Beach.
